TechCrunch: Google Search is rebuilt around AI at I/O 2026
At Google I/O 2026, Google announced what it describes as the most significant change to Search in 25 years. The traditional list of links is being replaced by an “intelligent search box” — a conversational interface designed for longer, natural-language queries with AI-generated suggestions beyond standard autocomplete.
The restructuring builds on several new capabilities. AI Mode, already used by 2.5 billion monthly users through AI Overviews, now supports follow-up questions within the same session. Starting summer 2026, users can create Information Agents — autonomous processes running 24/7 that monitor the web and notify users of relevant changes, effectively restarting the capability Google discontinued with Google Alerts. Generative UI delivers custom, interactive layouts in response to individual queries. Users can also build mini-apps directly in Search by typing natural language commands.
Under the hood, the redesign relies on Gemini Flash 3.5 and the Antigravity platform, enabling stateful project spaces that users can return to across sessions.
The shift matters for product teams because it changes how users discover and navigate content. Publishers are already experiencing declining referral traffic as AI Overviews handle research directly, and this update accelerates that trend. Product managers building consumer products that rely on Search-driven acquisition need to account for a world where AI surfaces answers instead of directing users to websites — and where the path from query to product is no longer a link.
