AI Tinkerers: global meetup network for hands-on AI builders
AI Tinkerers is a global network of local meetup chapters for practitioners actively building AI systems. With 115,000 members across 245 cities, it has become one of the primary in-person gathering points for the technical side of the AI builder community, running over 200 events in any given 90-day window, with roughly 40 hackathons per quarter.
The format distinguishes it from most professional communities: formal presentations are replaced by live demos. Members bring working code, unfinished prototypes, and architecture diagrams to share what they are actually building—including failure modes and trade-offs. Topics covered at chapter events span agent frameworks, LLM optimization, computer vision applications, retrieval-augmented generation, and production infrastructure. The emphasis is on candid technical work and shipped things over polished decks.
Members come from ML engineering, software development, research, and product management. City chapters in major hubs run events monthly, while regional meetups serve practitioners in smaller cities. As the community itself describes it, the purpose is “small rooms where practitioners compare notes before the path is obvious.”
For product managers, AI Tinkerers offers access to practitioner-level technical signal before it surfaces in blog posts or conference talks. Attending a chapter meetup gives PMs direct exposure to what is working in production AI—not as reported months after deployment, but as observed while shipping. The community is less focused on career development or networking in the traditional sense, and more useful for PMs who want to stay calibrated on what is technically feasible and what is not, as the underlying tools change rapidly.
