The platform approach

Instead of each product team building its own AI integrations, Calendly created shared AI infrastructure — a platform layer that provides common capabilities like natural language understanding, scheduling intelligence, and personalization services. Product teams consume these capabilities through internal APIs, similar to how they might use a shared authentication or analytics service.

This architecture allows new AI-powered features to ship quickly because the foundational work (model hosting, prompt management, evaluation pipelines, monitoring) is handled once at the platform level rather than duplicated across every team.

Why this matters for PMs

The article makes a strong case that the AI platform model solves three common problems. First, consistency: when AI capabilities are centralized, the quality and behavior are uniform across the product. Second, velocity: product teams skip the months of AI infrastructure setup and go straight to building user-facing features.
