True Intent Study checklist: before, during, and after

This checklist covers the full True Intent Study workflow — from defining objectives and configuring the intercept through data collection to analysis and longitudinal benchmarking.

Before

  • Define study objective: top tasks, task completion, benchmark, or all three
  • Identify target pages for intercept placement (entry pages, not exit pages)
  • Estimate weekly traffic on target pages using analytics
  • Calculate invitation rate to reach 300-600 responses within study duration
  • Design survey in three phases: intent (before task), outcome (after task), experience (metrics)
  • Keep total survey under 10 questions and 5 minutes
  • Write intercept copy explaining task-first-then-survey flow
  • Insert JavaScript intercept snippet on target pages
  • Configure cookie-based deduplication and mobile compatibility
  • Pilot for 24-48 hours at low invitation rate (2-3%)

During

  • Monitor daily response rates; adjust invitation rate if below target
  • Check “Other” percentage on intent question; add missing categories if >20%
  • Verify data is collecting properly on both desktop and mobile
  • Watch for technical issues (broken intercept, survey not loading, cookie conflicts)

After

  • Tabulate top-task distribution and rank by visitor frequency
  • Calculate task completion rate per task
  • Code open-ended failure responses into themes (use AI for first pass)
  • Cross-tabulate completion rates by segment and device
  • Run key-driver analysis on experience ratings
  • Build priority matrix: task frequency x failure rate = impact score
  • Write executive summary with top 3 findings and recommendations
  • Compare against previous benchmark (if available)
  • Present actionable findings: priority tasks, failure themes, specific page locations
  • Schedule next study cycle (continuous or quarterly)
