How to run a first click test: a practical guide with AI prompts
A SaaS company redesigning its dashboard noticed that 34% of new users were not finding the “Create Project” button within their first session — a critical activation metric. What first click testing is

When to use first click testing
- When a new page layout, navigation design, or homepage has been created and the team wants to verify that users can identify where to start key tasks before building a full interactive prototype.
- When comparing two or more design variants (different button placements, navigation labels, or page layouts) and needing a fast, quantitative answer about which one guides users to the right first action.
- When a redesign of an existing page is planned and the team wants baseline data on where users currently click first, to measure improvement after the change.
- When the visual hierarchy of a page is in question — the team suspects users are drawn to the wrong elements (a decorative image instead of a CTA, a secondary nav instead of the primary one) and needs data to confirm or refute this.
- When validating icon or label clarity — do users associate the icon or label with the correct function, as measured by where they click when given a task that requires that function?
Not the right method when the research question requires observing a multi-step interaction — first click testing captures only the initial click, not the full journey. For end-to-end task evaluation, use moderated or unmoderated usability testing. Also not appropriate when the question is about information architecture without visual context — tree testing isolates navigation structure from visual design and is the better choice for evaluating category labels and groupings. First click testing should not be used as a substitute for usability testing; it answers “do users know where to start?” but not “can they finish the task?” or “why did they struggle?”

How to conduct a first click test (step-by-step)
1. Select the page or screen to test and define success zones
Choose the page, screen, or wireframe you want to test. Export it as a static image (PNG or JPEG) at the resolution users would see it. Before running the test, define the “success zone” for each task — the area of the image where a correct first click would land. This is typically the navigation element, button, link, or section that begins the correct path for the task. Be precise but reasonable: if the correct answer is a button, the success zone should include the button and a small margin around it.
2. Write task scenarios that represent real user goals
Create 3-5 tasks that reflect what real users would try to do on this page. Each task should describe a goal, not an instruction: “You want to change your account password” rather than “Click on Settings.” Avoid using words that appear on the page as labels — the task should test whether the interface communicates its purpose, not whether participants can match words. Keep tasks short (one sentence) and focused on a single action.
3. Choose the testing tool and configure the study

If participants can interact with a live prototype or website, they may click, see the result, go back, and click somewhere else — but the tool only records the first click, which may not represent their considered choice. Not defining success zones before launching the test
If success zones are defined after seeing the results, there is a risk of unconsciously adjusting them to make the results look better.
