xAI launches Grok add-on for Google Workspace

xAI released a free Google Workspace add-on on July 24, 2026, making Grok available directly inside Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides without requiring a separate browser tab. A single installation from the Google Workspace Marketplace covers all three applications. The add-on places Grok in a sidebar panel that can stay open alongside any document.

The feature set is tailored to each application. In Docs, Grok can transform rough notes into structured documents with proper headings, correct grammar, and maintain consistent formatting throughout longer pieces. In Sheets, it reads spreadsheet data, answers queries while citing the specific cells used, generates formulas, creates charts, and recalculates scenarios when assumptions change. In Slides, it converts outlines into full presentations by researching content from the web, inserting relevant diagrams, and matching the existing theme.

For writers and content teams, the Docs integration is the most immediate use case. Grok’s ability to pull context from web sources while working within the document window reduces the switching between browser tabs, notes, and the draft that characterizes much research-heavy writing. The formatting assistance — converting rough notes to structured documents — addresses the blank-page stage of writing rather than editing already-developed drafts.

The timing follows xAI’s release of a similar integration for Microsoft 365 the previous week, covering Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. The Google Workspace add-on extends the same capability to the other major productivity suite. Both integrations are free. Access to Grok’s underlying models still requires an xAI account, and the depth of capability available depends on the subscription tier.
