Typeahead: inline AI writing suggestions across all Mac apps

Typeahead launched on Product Hunt on June 1, 2026, reaching 295 upvotes on its first day. The tool is an AI writing assistant that operates inline across any macOS text field—Slack, email, notes, documents—offering suggestions that appear at the cursor as you type, accepted with Tab or ignored by continuing to write.

The technical choices behind the product are deliberate. The model runs locally on the device using Gemma (1.7B to 4B depending on device capability), meaning writing never leaves the machine and the tool functions offline. There are no subscriptions: it is a one-time purchase. Memory footprint is around 300MB.

The design philosophy is augmentation rather than replacement. Suggestions adapt to the context of the application—they read the surrounding text and the app type—so what appears in a Slack thread differs from what appears in a formal document. The tool does not generate full sections or take over authorship; it completes the sentence or phrase the writer has started.

For writers who use AI tools but find context-switching between a chat interface and their writing application disruptive, Typeahead offers an alternative model: AI assistance that stays in the flow of the work rather than sitting adjacent to it.

The tool is Mac-only at launch, with no Windows version announced.
