YouTube adds AI podcast recommendations and adaptive speed for Premium users
YouTube announced on May 28, 2026 that Premium subscribers can now use an AI recommendation tool for podcasts: users ask the platform for episode suggestions based on mood, genre, or shows they already follow. The feature extends the existing “Ask Music” personalization layer into podcasts, adding content-specific signals to an already established conversational discovery mechanism.
Two additional features shipped alongside it: Auto Speed, which adjusts playback rate during slower speech without altering pitch, and On-the-Go mode, which surfaces quick navigation controls for listeners multitasking away from the screen. Both launched on Android first.
The update comes as YouTube reported 1 billion monthly active podcast viewers globally and 800 million hours of podcast viewing among Premium users in April 2026 alone. For podcast creators and journalists producing audio content, the AI recommendation layer matters because it shifts how new audiences find episodes — from search-keyword discovery toward conversational intent matching. Content answering specific questions or serving specific listening moods becomes more findable than content built around broad topic keywords.
