Google rolls out Gemini writing tools across Docs, Sheets, and Slides
Google embedded Gemini AI capabilities directly into Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive. In Docs, a new “Help me create” tool lets users describe what they want to write, and Gemini generates a fully formatted first draft by pulling information from Gmail, Chat, and Drive.
Context
The new tools go beyond basic AI writing assistance. “Match writing style” unifies tone and voice across a document when multiple people have contributed sections with different styles. “Match the format” lets you mirror the structure of an existing document, filling it in with new content. Gemini can also refine specific sections without regenerating the entire document.
Why this matters for writers
Google’s approach puts AI writing assistance where people already work, eliminating the need to switch to a separate AI tool. For teams collaborating on documents, the style-matching feature addresses a real problem: maintaining consistent voice across multiple authors. The integration with Drive and Gmail means Gemini can reference your existing documents, emails, and notes when generating content, producing first drafts that are grounded in your actual work rather than generic model outputs.
