Google expands Gemini Canvas for writing and project building in AI Mode

Google expanded access to Canvas in AI Mode to all users in the U.S. Canvas allows users to draft documents, refine creative writing, and build shareable projects directly within Google Search, without navigating to a separate app.

Context

Canvas was previously available only through Gemini to AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. With this rollout, it becomes accessible through Google Search’s AI Mode, putting it in front of a much larger audience. Users can describe an idea to Canvas, watch it generate code or content, and iterate through conversation. The feature competes with similar offerings from OpenAI (ChatGPT’s Canvas) and Anthropic (Claude’s Artifacts).

Why this matters for writers

Canvas addresses a friction point in AI-assisted writing: the need to switch between a search/research context and a writing context. By embedding writing tools directly in Search, Google allows writers to move from research to drafting in a single interface. The creative writing refinement feature lets writers get feedback on drafts and iterate without leaving the environment where they found their source material.
