Anthropic: Claude Sonnet 5 launches as default model for free and Pro plans

Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 5 on June 30, 2026, replacing Sonnet 4.6 as the default model for free and Pro plan users. The upgrade is significant for writers who use Claude directly or through tools built on the API: the new model brings substantially better autonomous reasoning and multi-step task handling at a price point roughly equivalent to its predecessor.

Sonnet 5 is positioned as an agentic model—one that can plan sequences of steps, use tools like browsers and search, and complete long-horizon tasks without requiring repeated human intervention. For writing workflows, this means things like research-gather-draft loops, citation checking, and content repurposing across formats become more reliable as automated tasks rather than supervised ones.

The performance improvement is meaningful at the editorial layer. Sonnet 5 reports lower rates of hallucination and factual drift compared to Sonnet 4.6, which matters for writers using Claude to assist with research synthesis or fact-dense drafting. Anthropic’s safety testing also shows reduced rates of unwanted behaviors, including less susceptibility to producing misleading content under adversarial prompts.

Pricing runs at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens through August 31, 2026, then shifts to $3 and $15 after that date. For individual writers using Claude Pro or free tiers, the model change is automatic—no configuration required to access the upgrade.
