Coursera: AI Tools for Creative Design

Anton Voroniuk, a Coursera top instructor with a 4.5-star rating, built this course through SkillsBooster Academy for designers and career changers who want to move beyond single-tool experiments and build actual AI-assisted production workflows. The course is beginner-level — no prior design or AI experience required — and runs around four hours across six modules.

What the course covers

The first module establishes AI fundamentals in design: what generative models do, where they fail, and how to think about output quality. This framing sets up the hands-on work that follows.

Three modules then cover specific tools in depth. The Canva AI module focuses on brand identity work: generating logo assets, building brand kits, producing social media templates, and maintaining visual consistency across asset types. The Figma AI module covers UI layout generation, wireframe iteration, and moving quickly from a rough concept to a design file ready for developer review. The Adobe Firefly and Photoshop module covers image generation, background removal, object compositing, and batch automation scripts that handle repetitive retouching tasks.

The fifth module ties the tools into an end-to-end workflow. Students move a creative brief through Firefly for initial concept generation, Figma for layout and iteration, Canva for brand asset application, and Photoshop for final polish and automation. This sequencing addresses a real gap in many designers’ AI use: tool-by-tool fluency without knowing how to chain tools into a coherent production process.

The sixth module covers career preparation: which roles are most affected by AI-assisted design, how to document AI workflow competency in a portfolio, and where the field is heading.

Students complete five graded assignments throughout the course and a final project. All assignments use free tiers or trial accounts of the covered tools.

Who the course is for

The course works well for three groups: graphic and visual designers who have avoided AI tools and want a structured entry point; career changers building a design skill set from scratch; and marketing generalists who produce design assets and want to accelerate that part of their work.

Experienced designers who already use Figma AI and Firefly in their daily work will find the pace slow. The workflow synthesis module may still be useful as a reference, but the individual tool modules will cover ground they already know.

The course does not cover motion design, 3D, video production, or print-specific workflows.
